Here is how activists are breaking through lsrael’s communications blackout in Gaza. Israeľ’s “total blockade” following the declaration
of war on Gaza on October 7 severely restricted Gaza’s internet access, with Gaza City’s telecommunication services completely cut off for several days.
Activists have found a way to circumvent the cutoff and provide ordinary civilians with an internet connection: eSlM cards. An eSIM card allows users to activate a mobile
network’s cellular plans without the need for a physical SIM card. Due to the dire financial situation and the difficulties connecting, people in
Gaza have to rely on international activists to provide them with free eSIMs.

Through an extensive social media campaign and links with telecommunications start-up Simly, almost 1,000 people, mainly medical staff and journalists, have been provided with eSIMs so far. Reporters on the ground in Gaza have warned that
Israel is deliberately attacking the press to stop them from documenting Israeli war crimes. The recent aggression on Gaza has shown how in 2023 a genocide can be documented on social media.
